Lasers and
dentistry have been linked for several decades though they have not
been found in main stream dentistry until recently. It is only in
the last ten years or so that significant advancement has been made
in laser dentistry which has made it practical for every day use.
Previous dental lasers were cumbersome and had very limited clinical
application. Lasers were not very common in general practice. Currently,
only 15% of American dentists offer laser dentistry, it is the “wave
of the future."
Lasers have revolutionized the dental field. They have replaced drilling
in some applications and have allowed general dentists to offer services
that were traditionally available only at a specialty office. Many
surgical procedures that previously required cutting, suturing, and
long uncomfortable healing time are now done with a laser with more
precision and better results. Patients are experiencing shorter healing
time and minimal post-operative discomfort for soft and hard tissue
procedures such as gingival contouring, frenectomies, orthodontic
tooth exposure, canker sore treatment, crown lengthenings, fillings,
and implant placement.
